Two St. Louis residents recently pleaded guilty to participating in the Jamaican Lottery Scam - that's the old phone scam where someone calls you and says that you've won the Lottery. Then they tell you to send a processing fee to claim your prize.
That's how you know it's a scam. You will never be asked to pay money to collect a Lottery prize. And, of course, the first step in winning the Lottery is buying a ticket. You'll know if you are a winner by checking your numbers.
We've heard from our colleagues in South Dakota that a similar scam is being used there. Someone is calling claiming to be with the Mega Millions Lottery. Mega Millions is a multi-state game operated by your state Lottery. You must present your ticket to claim a prize. If you have a question about winning the Lottery, contact the Lottery directly. We won't call you.
